- Jihadist attacks occurred in Northern Togo in late June and mid-July 2024. These attacks, which claimed several victims, illustrate the insecurity that has been raging in the northern part of the country since 2021 and is a key driver of acute food insecurity. The persistent insecurity is forcing populations to reduce their movements and constraining access to main sources of food and income. As a result, the number of people facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes is expected to increase during the lean season.
- The food security of poor households, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) has deteriorated further during the lean season. Many households are forced to consume minimal amounts of food and cannot afford all essential non-food expenses. They are likely to adopt further negative coping strategies and face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes.
- During the lean season, poor households' food stocks are at their lowest level, but markets are generally well-supplied with stable prices compared with the previous month. Prices, however, remain above the five-year average in all regions of the country, making access difficult for poor households that are market-dependent for their food.
- The month of June, which corresponds with the peak of the rainy season in southern Togo, was marked by abundant rainfall across the country, enabling weeding and the continued establishment of crops such as soybeans, cassava, and sweet potatoes. Corn in the south is in the flowering and ripening phase. In the northern regions, notably Centrale, Kara, and Savanes, plot preparation activities are ongoing and some areas are in sowing phase. The agricultural campaign, which has so far proceeded without major incident in the secure regions, should result in favorable harvests.

In remote monitoring, a coordinator typically works from a nearby regional office. Relying on partners for data, the coordinator uses scenario development to conduct analysis and produce monthly reports. As less data may be available, remote monitoring reports may have less detail than those from countries with FEWS NET offices. Learn more about our work here.
