    • The dry season, which started in December, is progressing normally and will continue to support the harvesting and processing of food crops including IVS rice, cassava, groundnut and sweet potato. Average to above-average staple crop production from the main 2016 season is allowing for normal availability and access to food for most households across the country allowing them to remain in Minimal (IPC Phase 1) acute food insecurity.

    • Coffee and cocoa production is on-going in Kailahun District at average levels, increasing opportunities for wage labor and income from marketing.  Despite this normal cash crop production, below-average production of upland rice, as well as the above-average costs of petrol continues to limit food availability and market access for poor households. Kailahun district will remain in Stressed (IPC Phase 2) acute food insecurity through at least May 2017. 

    • Market functioning is improving normally across the country as harvests continue to increase supplies and reduce price pressure. Household and market stocks are expected to remain adequate through at least June 2017, leading to normal timing for the lean season. This, coupled with the expected above-average off-season production, will allow almost all districts to improve to or remain in Minimal (IPC Phase 1) acute food insecurity from February to May 2017.
