    • Agricultural production is down 29 percent from the average. This reduction falls short of household consumption needs because of persistent insecurity, which has prevented some producers from gaining access to cropland, and because of climatic hazards that have prevented crops in the sown areas from completing their growing cycles under good water conditions.

    • Market supplies of consumer products are also down due to reduced agricultural production and disruptions to movements due to insecurity and internal and external obstacles. As a result, compared to the average, commodity prices are up 22 percent, 28 percent, and 10 percent, respectively, for millet, sorghum, and maize. These high price levels reduce access for households facing shortages already dealing with low incomes resulting from the loss of agricultural income and reduced remittances due to COVID-19 restrictions.

    • The current state of emergency in the country concerning health and security, along with frequent and widespread terrorist attacks, especially in Tillabéry, is reducing the space for humanitarian interventions to benefit conflict-affected populations. However, the situation is more favorable to humanitarian actions in Diffa and Maradi than in Tillabéry and Tahoua, where areas are much less secure for the widespread delivery of food assistance.

    • Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes prevail in Tillabéry and northern Tahoua, where, in addition to a lack of food availability, at least 20 percent of poor households lack sufficient income and purchasing power and do not have access to humanitarian food interventions. However, thanks to good coverage of food needs through humanitarian interventions benefiting at least 20 percent of households in need, Stressed! (Phase 2!) food insecurity prevails in Diffa and southwestern Maradi.
