In addition to access to own production from an average cereal harvest that is deemed sufficient for local consumption needs, the quality of food consumption by most households in the country is enhanced by the ongoing harvests of irrigated agricultural products. These favorable food conditions are observed in the majority of the agricultural and agro-pastoral livelihood zones of the country.
-
In pastoral areas and in those having recorded production deficits due to floods, the availability of basic foodstuffs is sufficient in most markets even if they are lower than the average. These availabilities are also lower than the demand on the markets of the conflict zones of Tillabéry, Tahoua and Diffa. The prices of both consumer products and animals are above average and provide favorable terms of trade for herding households.
-
The main ongoing livelihood activities relate to the maintenance and harvesting of irrigated crops and represent typical employment opportunities that allow poor households to access normal levels of income.

Security has increased in intensity with security incidents on civilian populations recorded in January 2021 in the regions of Diffa and Tillabéry. This civil insecurity and its corollaries of population displacements, dysfunction of markets and livelihoods cause food insecurity whose level persists in Crisis (phase 3 IPC) in the regions of Tillabéry and North Tahoua and in Stress (Phase 2! IPC) in the Diffa and Maradi regions where the food assistance provided helps to alleviate food tensions.
