The peak population in need (PIN) is often, but not always, observed over a two-to-three month period during a country’s lean season when food availability and access are typically at their lowest. FEWS NET publishes a Peak Food Assistance Needs Outlook Brief twice a year with estimated peak PINs for the next 12 months. The Peak Food Assistance Needs Outlook Brief should be used alongside monthly FAOBs.

The population in need (PIN) is the total number of people requiring urgent humanitarian food assistance. This number reflects the total population estimated to face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity outcomes, including those who are receiving humanitarian food assistance and those who are not. FEWS NET produces peak PIN estimates twice a year and provides updated PINs in our monthly FAOBs.
