- Erratic rain was observed in Haiti during the first two dekads of March.
- Above-average temperature persists over Haiti during the start of season.
- Above-average rainfall is expected for April, which will help reduce the deficit over dry areas
During the month of March, erratic rainfall has been observed over Haiti. Some areas of Sud and Nippes, as well as the northern Nord-Ouest and Nord regions, are experiencing above-average rainfall, while the rest of the country is experiencing deficient conditions, see Figure 1. Despite the uneven distribution of rainfall, vegetation health is well above average, according to satellite-based vegetation health reports.
High temperatures persist on the island, marking the fourth consecutive year with above-average temperatures. This may favor the emergence of pests and diseases at different phenological stages.
The rainfall forecast for the month of April suggests above average rainfall, which would favor planting activities and the development of crops in early phenological stages, see Figure 2. For the months of May and June, rainfall and temperature are expected to be close to average; however, erratic rainfall could affect localized crop areas.
