Near average climatic conditions are enabling soil preparation activities for the spring agricultural season in certain regions of the country, in particular the South. This increases the demand for agricultural workers in the region. At the same time, in addition to Congo peas, roots, tubers and bananas, winter beans are about to be harvested. Regions in the center and north of the country will initiate plowing activities for this season starting in March.
In addition, precipitation is reported in the North, the Central Plateau and Nippes, due to a cold front crossing the island of Haiti. According to Météo-Haiti, rain is still expected in almost all departments of the country. If these conditions prove favorable, as a prelude to the spring season, they would nevertheless threaten the bean plantations, in the advanced maturation phase.
Markets are normally supplied with local and imported products, insecurity having only caused sporadic shortages in some of them, particularly those in the capital. The price of staple foods remains high, due to the continued depreciation of the exchange rate and the increase in the cost of public transport due to the increase in fuel prices. Prices therefore remain above last year and their five-year average.
Faced with the disruption of typical livelihood activities that reduce access to income, households from poor neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince that are impacted by gang violence, those from areas suffering the residual impact of the earthquake, or more vulnerable to rainfall and price shocks and more dependent on the market for their consumption, cannot meet their food needs and remain in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) food insecurity. The households the least affected by the 2021 shocks and those benefiting from emergency humanitarian assistance are facing Stressed (IPC Phase 2) outcomes.
