    • The Sudan Acute IPC Analysis for April to June 2017 estimated more than 3.3 million people currently face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity, including some populations in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) in conflict-affected areas of South Kordofan, Darfur, and areas hosting South Sudanese refugees.

    • In the main conflict-affected areas in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, the security situation has remained generally stable since the beginning of 2017, but inter-tribal conflicts have erupted in some parts of East Darfur, North Kordofan and West Kordofan states during April and May 2017, triggering limited displacement from East Darfur into neighboring areas of North Darfur.

    • In early May, the number of South Sudanese refugees entering Sudan increased significantly, with nearly 42,000 arriving between May 1-15, bringing the total number of refugee arrivals since January 1, 2017 to more than 120,000, according to UNHCR. East Darfur State accommodates about one-third of new arrivals since the beginning of January 2017, and one quarter of the total South Sudanese refugees in Sudan. The upcoming onset of rains in June is likely to limit influxes of refugees during the upcoming months.

    • Staple food prices have begun seasonal increases slightly earlier than normal as market demand begins to increase prior to the peak of the lean season. Above-average market supply from the 2016/17 harvests have moderated price increases in consumption markets, while the bulk purchases by Strategic Reserve Corporation (SRC) reinforced price increases in the main production markets. April price levels were similar to or slightly above April 2016 prices but well above the five-year average, with continued high inflation and depreciation of local currency.
