Acute food insecurity persists in the Southern Cassava-Coffee, East Congo Nile Highland Subsistence, and Bugesera Cassava Livelihood Zones, particularly in Bugesera, Huye, Gisagara, Nyamagabe, Nyanza, and Nyaruguru districts. Two successive below-average harvests, namely, Season A and B, has reduced household incomes from crop sales and agricultural labor in these areas, weakening purchasing power of the poor. Food security outcomes are expected to deteriorate to Stressed (IPC Phase 2) by April for at least 20 percent of the households in these zones.

In addition, Foot and Mouth disease in Eastern Province’s district of Nyagatare has begun to spread to other districts in the East along the Tanzanian border, exacerbating food insecurity for poor households in these areas.

Maize, banana, and sweet potatoes prices have remained fairly stable, following the Season A harvest in February. However, increases in cassava floor and bean prices were observed in March, and are expected to peak in May, constraining household access for poor households. While Season B harvests are expected to improve household access to food and labor income toward the end of May, through July, early season losses are likely to reduce overall output.
In remote monitoring, a coordinator typically works from a nearby regional office. Relying on partners for data, the coordinator uses scenario development to conduct analysis and produce monthly reports. As less data may be available, remote monitoring reports may have less detail than those from countries with FEWS NET offices. Learn more about our work here.
