FEWS NET, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, is a leading provider of early warning and analysis on acute food insecurity around the world.
Created in 1985 by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in response to devastating famines in East and West Africa, FEWS NET provides unbiased, evidence-based analysis to governments and relief agencies who plan for and respond to humanitarian crises. FEWS NET analyses support resilience and development programming as well. FEWS NET analysts and specialists work with scientists, government ministries, international agencies, and NGOs to track and publicly report on conditions in the world’s most food-insecure countries.
Our reporting includes:
- Monthly reports and maps detailing current and projected food insecurity
- Alerts on emerging or likely crises
- Special reports on factors that contribute to or mitigate food insecurity, including weather and climate, markets and trade, agricultural production, conflict, livelihoods, nutrition, and humanitarian assistance
- Access to data, learning, and analysis of the underlying dynamics of recurrent and chronic food insecurity and poor nutritional outcomes, to improve early warning and better inform response and program design
The FEWS NET Approach
FEWS NET is funded and managed by USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA). FEWS NET implementers work together to bring the world timely, comprehensive insights into global food insecurity.
Analyze Acute Food Insecurity for Early Warning
We use advanced tools and forecasting skills to predict future cases of acute food insecurity, with field offices in countries that are known or likely to experience acute food insecurity, in order to inform humanitarian response.
Share Learning and Data
We develop and manage technologies to document, analyze, and share FEWS NET knowledge, learning and data to enhance and strengthen FEWS NET practices, and inform private and public agencies working in food security.
Analyze Dynamics of Food, Nutrition, and Livelihood Security
We analyze the dynamics of food, nutrition, and livelihood security so policymakers can design programs that address the root causes of persistent or recurrent food insecurity, malnutrition, and vulnerability.
Monitor and Forecast Agroclimatic Conditions
We seek understanding of the global climate system using remote sensing, modeling, and field observation to provide agroclimatology early warning information products and services.
Advance Technology and Innovation
We keep pace with rapidly evolving applied information technologies as well as innovations and analytical tools that will increase the efficiency, timeliness, and impact of FEWS NET and its services.
