As mensagens-chave
  • In the Far-North, market supply of staple foods remains above average. Household demand is normal; however, overall demand has increased as a result of NGOs purchasing food locally. In the main monitored markets, sorghum and maize prices are on average below last year’s prices by 41 and 32 percent, respectively, and the five-year average by 21 and 20 percent, respectively. Income from livestock and onion sales is below average. Specifically for onions, prices are down 20 percent compared to the five-year average as Yaoundé and Douala are now the main markets.

  • March was marked by an upsurge in Boko Haram incursions with 15 recorded incidents and looting of food and livestock in districts bordering Nigeria, mainly Fotokol and Kolofata. Despite these threats, internally displaced persons (IDPs) express their desire to return to their place of origin for the start of the main cultivation season. IDPs and poor host households in the Far-North are experiencing Stressed (IPC Phase 2) acute food insecurity.

  • Dry season production between December and March in the Northwest and Southwest regions decreased due to conflict; restricting access to production areas and below average labor availability. The first wet season in 2019 began normally. However, access to fields and laborers is limited with a reduction of endowments and input subsidies by cooperatives and state services; which are abandoned in some areas. In addition, fall armyworm is present in maize crops; most likely reducing yields, especially in the departments of Kupe and Manenguba, Southwest Region and Mezam, Bui, Menchum, Boyo, Ngoketunjia, and Momo, Northwest Region.

  • Official coffee and cocoa prices decreased in world markets this year; however, most farmers are currently selling these products on average 27 percent lower than official prices. Only those with access to markets along the Nigerian border manage to negotiate official prices with buyers. In addition, food prices increased compared to last year, atypically high price increases were observed in Kumbo, Mamfe, Kumba and Limbe markets. Deteriorating food access and incomes expose poor households and IDPs to Crisis (IPC Phase 3). Food assistance in the past month (mainly distributed by WFP and CRS), continues to cover 10 and 21 percent of IDPs and poor hosts, respectively, mitigating outcomes in some areas.
