The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) established the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) in 1985 in response to devastating famines in East and West Africa and a critical need for better and earlier warning of potential food security crises.
This year, FEWS NET marks its 40th anniversary with a special logo featuring the Ghanaian Sankofa, a symbol that shows us that the past holds wisdom for the present. The egg at the bird’s beak represents the valuable knowledge and wisdom we can obtain from looking at the past. Throughout 2025, FEWS NET will reflect on technological and analytical innovations from the last four decades that have contributed to earlier, more reliable forecasts of acute food insecurity.
