FEWS NET's monthly FAOBs include estimates of the population in need (PIN) of humanitarian food assistance seven months into the future, in addition to projections of anticipated acute food insecurity outcomes (the highest IPC area-level classification). FAOBs compare projected food assistance needs to the same time of the previous year and the five-year average for each country we monitor.
The population in need (PIN) is the total number of people requiring urgent humanitarian food assistance. This number reflects the total population estimated to face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity outcomes, including those who are receiving humanitarian food assistance and those who are not. FEWS NET estimates the PIN in a number of ways, with the highest or peak projected needs for a particular country published twice a year.
